Hey there, I’m Susannah. I Am the seamstress at Hem & Stitch.

I love working in Dressmaking. I love creating a design on paper that comes to life on a dress form. The magic of imagination, the soul of creativity, the feel of fabric in your hands, it all draws me in. This is where joy lives.

I’m excited that you’re here!

A Window into Me, the Studio and the Tools…

I spend my day amongst machinery that each specializes in a particular operation. They are my essential tools. I also stand at a 3′ x 6′ butcher block cutting table that holds the fabric that I cut up into shapes that build into beautiful wearables.

My beloved Straight Stitch Machine

I spend most of my day seated here at this machine. I have used a lot of machines over the years but nothing is better then a Juki.

my co-workers.

Dressforms

Dressforms are the foundation from which art blooms. They very politely hold the beginnings of shapes as I build and craft something beautiful to wear.

That’s Percy, my cat, in her new box. She likes to be photographed and included in all things I do. Thus, she is included on this new web page. The reason she looks threatening is that she is warning me to stay away from her new box. It is hers…. let’s be clear on that.

My Walking Foot

THe acquisition of this machine was life changing. It allows for quilting a pile of thick layers, I can create three dimentionally like never before. it’s old, well worn, well loved and I am thrilled to have it in my life.

An essentional tool, My Juki 4-Thread.

Every wearable requires secure construction. No matter what is cut, quilted, laced, beaded, appliqued, painted, gathered, hand stitched or bound, it’s seams need to be securely stitched and covered. That happens here. It is used all day, every day and because it’s a Juki, it’s dependable, perfect and is a part of every garment made in this studio.

My Beloved Applique Machine

This is another life changing acquisition. There is no better than an old Singer 20u. It’s old, well loved, well used and I can’t begin to imagine all the beautiful applique work it has created in it’s very long life. I am blessed to have found one to include in my studio.
